That’s the idea behind a new social uprising called Bank Transfer Day. The movement was started by 27-year-old Los Angeles art-gallery owner, Kristen Christian, as a response to aggressive tactics implemented by profit-driven corporate banks.

Supporters of Bank Transfer Day encourage bank customers from across the nation to move their money from big corporate banks, and put it into local, not-for-profit credit unions instead. It’s a positive way to support companies that you respect, and in turn respect you and your financial well-being.

After all, why continue to patronize a company that simply wants to make profits off of your financial situation, while doing nothing to help you better your life?
