about id theft

Identity theft happens when someone accesses your personal identification, without your permission, to commit fraud or other crimes.

Identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes affecting American consumers. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) estimates that as many as nine million Americans have their identities stolen each year. Unlike your fingerprints, which are unique to you and cannot be transferred to someone else, your personal data can be used by others to profit at your expense.

Identity theft is serious. Within hours of obtaining stolen information, thieves can order expensive cell phone service, apply for credit cards, open bank accounts and even receive a PIN from the DMV to update your information online. Although it is impossible to completely protect yourself from identity theft, there are things you can do to prevent someone from stealing your identity. UMe provides valuable information through our Identity Theft Resource Center to help you protect yourself from such crimes.
