Instagram “Security Email” That’s Actually a Phishing Trap
Cybercriminals are sending fake Instagram alerts to steal your info — here’s how to spot the scam and stay safe.
Cybercriminals have a new trick to steal your information — and they’re making it look like a legitimate alert from Instagram.
Here’s how it works: You get an email that appears to be an official Instagram security notice, warning that someone tried to log in to your account. It urges you to “Report this user” and includes a link.
But here’s the catch — the link doesn’t take you to Instagram’s site. Instead, it opens your email app and preloads a message that’s already addressed and ready to send, with the subject “Report this user to secure your account.”
If you hit send, your message doesn’t go to Instagram at all. It goes straight to a cybercriminal. They’ll then reply, pretending to be Instagram support, and try to convince you to share your password or other personal information.
How to stay safe:
- Never email your login details — Instagram will never ask you to send account info through email.
- Watch for urgency tactics — Scammers often try to make you act before you think.
- Verify alerts through the official app — If you get a security notice, log in to Instagram directly (don’t click links in emails).
Stay alert, and don’t let scammers catch you off guard.
