Tax Time Scams: Don’t Get Fooled! How to Spot and Avoid Tax Scams

Tax season is here, and while you’re focused on getting that sweet refund, scammers are on the lookout for ways to steal your info. At UMe, we want to help you stay safe from tax scams so you can file with confidence. Here’s what you need to know.

Scammers are using every trick in the book to target unsuspecting filers. They might impersonate the IRS, send phishing emails, or even text you with urgent requests for money or personal information. For example, if you get a call demanding immediate payment for “tax debts” or an email with a suspicious link, it’s likely a scam. Remember, the IRS never calls or emails to demand payment—if something feels off, don’t respond.

To protect yourself, file your taxes as early as possible so scammers can’t file a fraudulent return in your name. Always verify any communication by checking the official IRS website (irs.gov) and never click on links or share sensitive details through email or text. If you suspect a scam, report it to the FTC at irs.gov/identity-theft-central and contact your financial institution (that’s us!) immediately.

Common Tax Scams to Watch For

Scammers get creative this time of year, but some red flags stay the same. Here are a few of the most common tax scams:

  • IRS Impersonation Calls – If someone calls claiming to be from the IRS and demands immediate payment, hang up! The IRS never calls to demand payment over the phone.
  • Fake Tax Prep Services – Not all tax preparers are legit. Watch out for scammers who promise huge refunds or ask for personal info over email.
  • Phishing Emails and Texts – Scammers send emails or texts pretending to be the IRS or your bank. If you get an unexpected message asking for personal info, don’t click any links!

How to Protect Yourself

  • File Early – The sooner you file, the less time scammers have to try and file a fake return in your name.
  • Verify Before You Share Info – If someone contacts you about your taxes, double-check their credentials before giving out any personal details.
  • Use Secure Tax Services – Stick with well-known, trusted tax prep services, and avoid sharing sensitive info over email or phone.
  • Check Your Refund Status – Always check the status of your tax refund through the official IRS website: irs.gov.

What to Do If You Think You’ve Been Scammed

If you suspect fraud, take action right away:

  • Report it to the IRS at irs.gov/identity-theft-central.
  • Place a fraud alert on your credit reports through Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion.
  • Monitor your accounts for suspicious activity, and let UMe know if you spot anything unusual!
